Winners Announced here

31st of July is 'Uncommon Instrument Day' - a day in which we celebrate lesser know and unique musical instruments. At the end of a long day exploring Cradle, there is nothing better than sitting down around a camp fire and playing sweet music. Trouble is, Knights have to improvise as it looks like musical instruments didn't survive the crash...

What to do!
- Draw a new and unique instrument your Knight could play
- Elements making up your new and unique instrument should be found in the SK world
- Indicate on your drawing what each element of the instrument is made of
- Name your instrument!

Entry thread is here

Please include the following in your post:
- Your Knights name
- Your choice of top prize should you win (options listed below)

===H===

The Prizes
The number of top prizes given out will depend on participation. You will have the choice of the following top prizes:
-Green Leafy Aura
-Prismatic Wings
-Flying Snipe (purple, furniture)

Participation prizes of Large Purple Fireworks will be given out to every entry.

But WAIT! There is MORE!
I'm going to give you the opportunity win additional Purple Fireworks by recording a soundbite that best demonstrates what your new unique instrument would sound like if it was ever constructed. You can do this by using your voice, other RL instruments, household objects or any combination of those!

===H===

Other rules/information
-Only one entry per player
- I'm after original art work, not photoshopped screen shots of elements from the game.
- Elements used in the instrument can be part of in game object - for example the face plate of the Boosted Plate Helm
- Your drawing can be as detailed or as simple as you wish, but keep in mind this is primarily an art event
- Contest will finish 31 July at 11.59pm
- You may edit your post up until the deadline.
- Not sure how to post a soundbyte? There are a lot of free online recorders out there http://vocaroo.com/i/s0i2QfZF8qUo for example.

Questions can be posted in this thread, but entries must be in http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/115529

oh huh

Looks like an interesting new contest. I was confused why this didn't have a "new" tag then noticed its date is from a few months back. Silly Hera being all prepared and stuff...

I may take a dab at this. People love to make custom weapon designs so this'll be a different take on that! Wonder how a shadow steel drum would sound...

Ooooooh

Coincidence, because I just drew my friend's Knight playing a violin for her birthday.

But anyway, this sounds fun! I'm not the best at designing new objects, but Prismatic Wings are just TOO good to pass up.
Time to get started! :P

clarification post

Just for clarification, the second item on the list of prizes is the "prismatic wings" accessory, and not "prismatic valkyrie wings" or "prismatic dragon wings".

I know the first generation wings are the only one with the name listed above, but I want to clarify it here. I know several people who would enter purely if they were prismatic valkyrie wings and I want to know if I should prod them to attempt art for the first time in three years.

Also the list of prizes keep getting more varied and interesting. Regardless of what sort of wings these are I'm sure whoever ends up with a prize will be more than happy. :)

Yep

I know that they're the normal (stiff) wings, I'm just a sucker for any kind of wings (and I'm just a silly cheapskate) Especially Prismatic stuff. But yeah, good to clarify.
Even so I'd end up participating even if there was only a mustache prize thing.

(That leafy aura does sound neat too though...)

HEYA! Didja miss me? I haven't been able to access the forums because I was having a great time on vacation, and I was more than happy to see that Grey Havens could survive for two weeks without my humor. (Feel free to roast me here) Anyways, I'm glad to be back just in time for another super duper contest! It's always interesting to see what pops up in Hera's head next! I especially like the prizes this time! THE LEAFY AURA IS MIEEEEENNE!! *cough cough* eeerrrgghhhh..... Forget everything you just heard. IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK EVERYONE AND MAY THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!!!

With all the love in mah widdle heart :3 (Wow I've been gone long enough to say that)

Speaking of clarity

When you say "element" does that refer to shadow, elemental, piercing, and normal? So an example would be a shadow guitar thingy? Thanks for the help!

Crystal Clarifying Clear

For the bonus portion of the contest where we record what our instrument would sound like, are we allowed to use royalty-free sound clips from certain websites (such as https://www.freesound.org/)?
Are we also allowed to use the in-game sound effects to mash them all together using certain sound-manipulating programs?

Clearly Clarifying so Crystal Clear.

When you say "element" does that refer to shadow, elemental, piercing, and normal? I was referring more to a part of an existing item, but certainly you could create a shadow guitar (provided part of it was made up of shadow items in game)

For the bonus portion of the contest where we record what our instrument would sound like are we allowed to use royalty-free sound clips from certain websites Yes, and yes. The bonus portion is purely to have fun with and no points will be awarded for sounds. It is purely for my entertainment!

Vanadukulele.... Tee hee! Looking forward to it!

So we have to come up with a completely new instrument out of things found in Spiral Knights, or can we make an existing instrument in a unique way/with different traits? Or both?

So then what would an instrument made out of lumber's wood be? Would that considered elemental?

i believe both

New instrument seems the most workable, however it probably can be something similar to an instrument from back home. Knights may have played the flute, but without a proper flute maker we have to craft one out of discarded gun puppy parts mixed with jelly glue. Alternatively they could have discovered that light shards make a bright pinging noise, so putting a bunch of them into a shaker and shaking it makes a melodic ting like a triangle + rainstick.

I'd also assume an instrument made out of lumber would would be a woodwind. "Element" in this case is not referring to the damage types or status types, but rather a "game element". The grass under our feet, the metal floors of the clockworks, and the luminescent minerals are all "elements" we could use to make an instrument. "Shadow damage" isn't really something you can make music out of.

Sorry for the confusion!

I think I've confused folks with my use of the word 'element'. What I meant by that was if you want to use part of an item in game in your design you may. You don't need to use an entire helm, but rather just part of it. If you used part of a weapon in your design, such as a dark matter bomb casing, you could perhaps play music with an aura of shadow damage coming off it - that is something you could incorporate into your design if you really want to think outside of the box.

So we have to come up with a completely new instrument out of things found in Spiral Knights, or can we make an existing instrument in a unique way/with different traits? Or both? Both are fine. Just keep in mind that I'll be awarding points for originality so something new will likely score higher than a common instrument recreated in SK items.

Guys...

el·e·ment
ˈeləmənt/
noun: element; plural noun: elements;
1.
a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic.

Hera doesn't mean element as in the damage types (normal, shadow, piercing, elemental). Hera means element as in a part of a whole. Say your instrument was a guitar. You could say the neck of the guitar is made of lumber wood, or something similar. That's what Hera means. o_O

"Materials" and "ressources" would be more straightforward and on-point than "elements" for this context. I hope this advice is of help for future posts.

A few questions

Do we have to draw a character playing the instrument we design?

If the answer to that is yes, my follow-up question is: does that character have to be a knight, or could it be a monster?

Well, technically you theoretically could draw a picture of your knight playing your instrument. (that's what I did) Ultimatley though, if you do draw a picture of your knight playing it, you might want to draw just the instrument on a different sheet of paper and label the parts. As for the monster question, that seems like a job for... Hera!

Now that's something.

I actually have ideas pertaining to certain instruments, but as far as drawing them out goes I'm not gonna be able to do much. It's quite the prompt, however, and I'm hoping to see the creativity fly in this one.

Oh, and this seems relevant to the topic: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DKUTYxJEB44&autoplay=1

Do we have to draw a character playing the instrument we design? No. I'm judging based on the instrument. You can absolutely show it being played by a knight or a monster. Just keep in mind my focus will be on the instrument itself when it comes to judging.

Yea can Fighting Polygon's entry be put into the game as a new weapon, crafted from a bunch of shadow event items? Maybe like a sword that shoots out random music notes as you walk around playing it, with a charge that smashes it onto an enemy?

Entry is made

My entry is made, but I'm a bit upset about this. I just knew about this event TODAY from a friend of mine on steam.

I'm actually kind of concerned whether steam users are apart of the spiral knights community, because we seemed to have been overlooked for a whole week without knowing this event was taking place. It saddens me that nobody who was in charge of the Steam discussions stickies a thread reposting the event there, and if not post it there why not have linked this thread to a stickied steam discussion?

It seems really unfair, and kinda biased towards some of the users from steam, and here. So do to that my entry is late, and the image I made is also not of the quality I wanted because I literally had to rush it, and I guarantee that my image was not because of last minute. It was because of knowing about this event at a very late time, because no one told us about this event on steam.

I hope this gets worked out in the future cause wow.

Edit 1: I just noticed that there aren't any stickied discussions nor any rules listed. Seems like nobody works the discussions I don't see any mod, or admin type stickies or anything.

I play on Steam and I knew about it. The forums are not directly connected to the SK client by some magical special link. It's the responsibility of SK client users just as much as it is of Steam users to pay attention to the forums for things like this. There is no big conspiracy against Steam users.

Winners Announced!

Thank you again to all who entered! Its been a tough competition to judge; I was very impressed with all your entries and the effort and imagination put into the creation of your instruments. The winners, in no particular order, each winning their preferred prize:

Gustim TRUENOS! The bringer of thunder! (also the bringer of backache if you need to move it from one campsite to another!). Excellent use of materials found in game blended together to create an instrument that is very impressive.

Fighting-Polygon Seething Synthesis. I especially liked the dual purpose of the instrument and the idea of dark energy forming the strings. Wonderful!

Spiralka-Chan BoltedVeephone. A very simple idea using only a few items found in game, this idea works perfectly and I is something that I could totally see being created by stranded knights. Well done!

Prizes, along with participation prizes and bonus prizes for soundclips, will be delivered over the next couple of days. Thank you again for taking part in this event and be sure to keep an eye on the forums for the next one!
